Social Studies Curriculum Study Team
Anthony Lea and Farhana Zia, Co-Chairs
On May 15, 1995, the
Northborough/Southborough/Algonquin Regional Social
Studies Curriculum Team was asked by the Superintendent
to act on the state's request to review and critique the
draft of the Social Studies Curriculum Frameworks. The
team formed subcommittees to work separately
on the grade K-4, 5-8 and 9-12 components of the
curriculum. A compilation of their response was submitted
to the Superintendent's Office by the end of May, 1995 to
meet the June 2 submission deadline.
The Co-Chairs of the Social Studies Curriculum Team
met with Dennis DiSalvo, Superintendent of Schools, on
September 12, 1995 for the purpose of charting its course
for the 1995-96 school year.
The Co-Chairs of the Social Studies Curriculum Team
met on November 9, 1995 and decided that the first
meeting of the Curriculum Team should be a brainstorming
session focused on the direction for the Social Studies
Framework. Questions that were raised at this meeting
included:
What are our short and long term implementation goals?
Which themes and concepts should be emphasized at each
grade level?
How best can we focus on instilling "habits of
mind" in teachers, students?
The work of the Social Studies Curriculum Team will
continue through the 1995-96 school year in the hope of
scoping out the future direction of the Social Studies
program K-12.
