Redevelopment Authority
December, 1996
The Redevelopment Authority spends approximately seven months each year
planning and organizing the annual Applefest celebration which is held the third week-end
of September. This is an event which focuses on the downtown of Northborough, with many of
the activities occurring directly in the downtown area. The funding for Applefest is
raised entirely through donations, including many generous contributions from local
businesses and individuals. The 1996 Applefest festivities were a huge success this year.
Activities throughout the week-end included a puppet show, the annual 5k road race, the
streetfair, the parade, a spaghetti supper, the Northborough Art Guild's annual arts and
craft sale, the open house at the Historical Society, the Junior Woman's Club apple pie
cafe and apple recipe contest, the Boy Scout Troop I pancake breakfast, the family concert
held at the Trinity Church, the sports fest & tournament held at InSports, and the
very popular "A Taste of Northborough".
Many thanks to the Redevelopment Authority/Applefest Committee
members including: Nancy Cavanaugh, Pam Bleakney, Chris Kowal, Tom Lowe, Diane Reynolds
and our parade coordinator Dick Perron all of whom spent countless hours planning this
event and then praying for sunshine, as most of the activities are held outside. Thanks
also to all of the numerous volunteers who make this week-end a very special event for the
residents of Northborough and for all of our visitors from surrounding communities.
I would like to thank all of the board members with whom I have the
pleasure of working. Thank you to the Planning Board, the Redevelopment Authority and the
Housing Partnership. I appreciate your dedication and your assistance in helping to make
my job easier and more enjoyable. I would also like to thank Debbie Grampietro, department
secretary and planning board secretary, for her dedication and support.
Respectfully sumitted Tom Lowe, Chairman;
Nancy Cavanaugh, Pam Bleakney, Chris Kowal
